The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, hesitated to declare this decision right away after his victory in November.

"This decision was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will always live inside me and my work," he added.

Campaign Controversy

During his campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

But his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting very different than his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated consistent with the home's original era.

The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
