A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Australian Open. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.
