The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
