The war of words before the Ashes continues to heat up, with former England bowler Broad stating that England will confront "probably the worst Australian team in over a decade" during their tour this winter.

David Warner's Bold Prediction Answered by Doubt

The former England bowler's claim was in response to David Warner – a long-time Ashes rival – forecasting a clean sweep for the hosts. "If the captain [Pat Cummins] doesn’t play, they might win one game," Warner said.

The Aussies remain undefeated in a men’s Ashes match at home since England’s 3-1 victory in the 2010-11 tour. Their 5-0 win three years later – on the back of seven defeats in their previous nine Tests – came before 4-0 series victories in the 2017-18 and 2021-22 campaigns.

Team Doubt and Injury Worries for the Hosts

However, the No 1-ranked Test team, who have suffered just a single defeat of their last thirteen series, enter the upcoming assignment with questions over the makeup of their batting lineup and the fitness of Cummins, who is doubtful to play in the opening match at the Perth stadium because of a back issue.

"It's extremely challenging to win in Australia as an England side, or any side," said Broad during his podcast. "The Australians are massive favourites."

"The Aussies face the most pressure because they’re expected to win, they’re formidable in home conditions, but they’ve got doubts over their squad and concerns over their skipper's condition. It's not unreasonable in believing – this isn't merely a view, it's a reality – it is likely the weakest Aussie lineup since the 2010 era. Meanwhile, it's the strongest England squad in over a decade. So those things match up to the reality that it’s going to be a brilliant Ashes series."

Parallel to Historic Tour

"Australia have been highly stable for a long period of time that you just knew who would open the batting, who would bat, what bowlers there were, and they don’t have that. It closely resembles a comparable scenario to the 2010-11 period when England went and won there. The reality is the Aussies typically need to underperform to lose in Australia and England have to be very good. The English have a solid opportunity of being very good and Australia have a decent chance of being bad."

Team Decision for the Visitors

A major issue for the English camp remains their selection at No 3, with Pope and Jacob Bethell contesting the spot. Cook, whose 766 runs paved the way for the tourists’ series win over a decade past, thinks it would be "strange" for Stokes' team to move away from Pope, who has been a consistent at number three for the past three seasons.

"I'd select Ollie Pope at three," Cook stated. "I think it’s a straightforward decision. You’ve got a player who has been involved in this preparation for several years. He’s captained the side, he has delivered remarkable performances for England and he’s a hundred-maker. He understands how to make big scores in first-class cricket. If they drop him now, I believe that alters the entire balance of what they’ve built up over the last few years."

Although praising Jacob Bethell as "a hugely gifted cricketer", Cook added: "It would represent a big, big gamble [to pick him] because if that doesn’t work what is the fallback option, a player you recently discarded? They’ve invested so much in people like Ollie Pope and [Zak] Crawley that it would be such a strange thing to make a switch at this stage."

Captaincy Shift and Broadcast Crew

Ollie Pope has been succeeded by Brook as England’s vice-captain but, as per Cook, that will "take the pressure off" the Surrey batsman.

"The management has acted decisively on that, considering in case of an injury to Stokes, they’ve got a guy in Harry Brook who has led the ODI team and it's evident that he appears well suited to it. This will take the pressure off. I don’t think weaken his position. I’m sure it will have hurt him because whenever you're removed from a leadership role it isn't perfect, but I doubt it undermines him."

Cook will be in the host nation as part of the broadcast team of the Ashes, and will be accompanied by fellow Ashes winners Finn and Graeme Swann as in-studio analysts. The network will offer a dedicated commentary stream but will use a mixed approach, with commentators Eykyn and Hatch based remotely in the United Kingdom, while Cook, Finn and Swann provide co-commentary from on location.
