Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family navigate their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
